The Var is in area Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur. It is bordering on the departments of the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Vaucluse, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Alpes-Maritimes and is bordered by the Mediterranean in the south. The Var is a department of which 56% of the surface are wooded (341 000 ha). The Var (as the majority of the departments of the Mediterranean coast) is an important tourist destination. Visit the cellars and the vineyards of Bandol, see the perched villages of the country of Fayence (Montauroux, Fayence, Callian, Seillans, Tourrettes, saint-Paul-in-Forest, Mons, Tanneron), make an excursion in the Massif de l'Esterel, windsurf in the peninsula of Giens, or take a boat for the island of Porquerolles or the underwater natural reserve of the island of Port-Cross. In the north of the department: the Haut-Var and its villages hill top, with the majestic natural sites of the Gorges du Verdon and the Lake de Sainte-Croix, and in south-east the Lake de Saint-Cassien.
